When should you take IELTS for study or exchange?

Work back from the date your programme needs an accepted score, separating application deadlines, language evidence and conditional offers. Includes Taiwan exchange examples.

Start with the date an accepted score must arrive

Work backwards from the language-evidence deadline, allowing time for preparation, results, delivery and a possible further attempt. An application deadline alone does not tell you when to take IELTS.

Record the accepted test, overall and component requirements, validity rules, evidence deadline and delivery method from the official programme page or your offer. This guide helps you plan; it is not a live test-seat calendar.

Degree applications and conditional offers

For a bachelor's or master's application, check whether language evidence is needed at application or can follow later. Scholarship deadlines may be separate. A conditional offer has outstanding requirements; read its specific English conditions and evidence deadline.

For example, Melbourne's international undergraduate guidance requires evidence satisfying an English-language condition before that offer becomes unconditional. This example does not establish the rules for other programmes or institutions.

Three Taiwan exchange examples

Checked 17 October 2026. Times below are Taipei time. These dated examples cover different selection years and particular university-level routes, not a complete national calendar or a list of currently open applications.

NTU: evidence belongs in the application

In the autumn-2026 application round for NTU’s autumn-2027 university-level exchange selection, the announced application window is 3 November 2026 at 10:00 to 9 November at 16:00. Language evidence cannot be replaced or supplemented during initial document review. Do not treat the general 12 November correction deadline as extra time to obtain a score. This round also requires a language certificate earned on or after 1 May 2025. Check the institution’s own recency rule when recording validity in your plan; the test’s general validity alone is not enough. Official NTU timeline and linked guidelines.

NCCU: registration and evidence upload have separate deadlines

In the autumn-2026 selection round covering autumn 2027 or spring 2028 exchange, NCCU’s registration deadline was 24 September 2026 at 16:00. Already-registered applicants must upload language evidence by 2 November 2026 at 16:00. That later date does not reopen registration. The guidelines tell students not to register unless they can upload the certificate by that deadline, because late submission prevents calculation of the selection total. Official NCCU guidelines and calendar.

Tamkang: a qualifying score is part of the application itself

In the 2026–2027 English and European-language group round, the online application ran from 12 November 2025 at 09:00 to 26 November at 17:00, and documents were first screened by each department before its own earlier deadline. English-group applicants had to attach a TOEFL iBT 70 or IELTS Academic 5.5 certificate, and partner universities may require more.

The guidelines also tell applicants not to list a partner university whose language requirement their score does not meet, because the International Office removes such choices without notice. At Tamkang, the IELTS score therefore shapes the choice list as well as eligibility. The office's process chart puts obtaining a language certificate as step one. Check the International Office for the current round. 2026–2027 announcement and exchange programme page.

Leave room for results and delivery

British Council Taiwan says most computer-test candidates receive results in 1–3 days, while its eTRF table lists 1–8 working days. It also describes possible verification delays. Do not treat a typical result time as a guarantee.

Check whether the institution accepts an uploaded eTRF or requires direct delivery, and allow for receipt and checking. Before relying on One Skill Retake, confirm acceptance for your exact programme.

Build your own backwards plan

Record What to enter
Destination and intake Institution, programme, degree/exchange route and year
Application and scholarship Separate deadlines and official sources
English conditions Test, overall score, component minima and validity
Evidence arrival Date, timezone and delivery method
First test Allow for result/delivery variability and a possible further attempt
Practice time Hours you can actually use each week

If a hypothetical programme needs evidence on 15 January, a test on 14 January is not a reliable plan. This is an illustration, not an institution's deadline. Use your own programme and provider requirements to choose a buffer.

Preparing alongside work

Try appropriate practice first to identify the skill and step that needs attention. Assign your available sessions to those gaps. A target band alone cannot establish how many weeks you need.

For speaking, record an answer to a familiar question, then listen for an incomplete idea and explain it with your own reason or detail. See the speaking comparison. For writing, develop one claim with a relevant example: paragraph practice and Task 1 overview practice.

Common questions

Can I apply now and submit IELTS later?

Only if your programme and intake allow it. Another person's conditional offer does not establish your rules. Ask the admissions team if published guidance is unclear.

Is meeting the overall band enough?

Check component minima, test type and validity as well. The band calculator and IELTS Essentials can help organise scores; the receiving institution determines eligibility.

Does this list all available test dates?

No. Use it to choose a sensible window, then check bookable dates with your provider.
